Sri Harihara Puthra Iyanar Temple, Analaitivu
A Sacred Temple of 450 Years — Island of Analaitivu, Jaffna, Sri Lanka
The Island & Its Sacred Land
Situated to the southwest of the Jaffna Peninsula, surrounded by the azure sea, the beautiful island of Analaitivu is a land where Shaivism and Tamil culture flourish together. Its name originates from the natural rock formations that act as a barrier against the waves — "Anai-alai-theevu" (the island that stops the waves), later simplified to Analaitivu. During the Dutch colonial era, it was known as Rotterdam. Among the more than ten temples that adorn this island, the Sri Harihara Puthra Iyanar Temple — with a history of approximately 450 years — stands out as the guardian deity of the entire island community.
The Divine Origin — The Chest from the Sea
About 450 years ago, the waves of the western sea carried ashore a mysterious wooden chest. The villagers who discovered it joyfully began carrying it inland. However, upon reaching a place called Nayina Kulam, the chest became immovably heavy — no one could lift or move it. The people set it down beneath a Koozhaa tree (a local species) and were unable to move it further despite all their efforts.
When they opened the chest in wonder, they found inside the sacred idols of Lord Iyanar flanked by Pooranai and Pushkalai — his divine consorts. At that very moment, a divine voice (asareeri) descended from the heavens: "Worship these deities you have received, every day without fail." From that day onward, that sacred spot became the abode of Lord Iyanar, and it stands today as a magnificent temple.
Puranic Origins & Divine Lineage
Lord Iyanar (Ayyappan / Harihara Puthra) is born of the divine grace of both Hari (Vishnu) and Haran (Shiva):
- Padma Puranam: When Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to destroy the demon Bhasmasura, Lord Iyanar was born from that divine union.
- Kanda Puranam: When Shiva appeared as Bhikshadana and Vishnu as Mohini in the Dharukaavana forest to humble the arrogant sages, Harihara Puthra was born in that auspicious moment.
- Indira's Protection: The Kanda Puranam also narrates how Iyanar sent his devoted warrior Maa Kaalar to protect Indraani (Indra's wife) from the demon Ajamughi, sister of Soorapadman.
Miracles & Divine Grace
- Bringing Rain: During times of drought, devotees who pray to Iyanar find that rain falls even before they reach home — a miracle witnessed and spoken of by generations.
- Healing Cattle: When livestock fall sick, tying a coin around the animal's neck as a vow (neerththi) in Iyanar's name heals the disease. He also cures village epidemics including smallpox and cholera through his divine grace.
- Divine Midnight Worship: Even today, after the evening puja ends and the temple doors are closed, devoted believers hear temple bells ringing at midnight — as the celestial beings (devas) are said to come and worship Lord Iyanar in the deep of night.
- Protection from Storms: Old Tamil verses narrate how, during a catastrophic storm when the sea rose in fury, the people prayed to Iyanar — and he appeared on his elephant vehicle, calmed the waves, and saved the island.
Temple Architecture & Sacred Features
- Sacred Idols: Lord Iyanar is enshrined in the Moolasthanam with his consorts Pooranai and Pushkalai. Within the inner prakaram are shrines for Vinayagar, Murugan, Nandi, Chandeshwarar, and Vairavar.
- The Sacred Chariot (Chittirattheer): In 1980, a magnificent 27-tiered temple chariot was crafted by Indian artisans with intricate sculptural detail. It is considered one of the finest temple chariots in all of Sri Lanka, on which Lord Iyanar rides in procession through the streets.
- Sangama Theertham: The sea to the west of the temple is revered as the Sangama Theertham (akin to Sethu Theertham) — bathing in these sacred waters is believed to cure all ailments.
- The Koozhaa Tree: The very Koozhaa tree under which the divine chest rested still stands within the temple grounds — healthy, sacred, and inseparable from the temple's identity.
- Annathanam (Food Charity): Since 1972, the temple's Annathanam Madam (charity kitchen) has served thousands of devotees without interruption during all festival days and Guru Puja occasions.
Annual Festival
Every year during the month of Aadi, the grand ten-day Mahothsavam begins with the flag-hoisting ceremony on the Poorvapaksha Shashti day. The festival draws thousands of devotees from across Sri Lanka and from the diaspora worldwide. Those who surrender to Sri Harihara Puthra Iyanar of Analaitivu are freed from the sufferings of fate and blessed with grace both in this life and the next.
